Books and Ideas #15: Interview with Robert Schleip, PhD from Ulm University in Germany
I have posted a new episode of Books and Ideas, which is the podcast where I put things that don't quite fit under "brain science."

I interviewed Dr. Robert Schleip of Ulm University in Germany after reading about him on the Science magazine website. I wanted to talk to him about his transition from body worker to research scientist. He proved to be lots of fun to talk to. I think you all will appreciate his and enthusiasm.

I enjoyed this quite a bit, since I had been a client of a rolfer, more than 20 years ago. He took before and after pictures. My posture was greatly improved. I am not really that open to that type of treatment, however, nothing else but pain medication was available to help me with the back pain I was dealing with at the time. The rolfing got me through it.

Thanks for the feedback. I never had the courage to try Rolfing myself even though I am a big fan of massage therapy. I am convinced that more musculoskeletal pain comes from the soft tissues (muscles and fascia) than the average physician appreciates.

The evidence and research presented by Dr. Schleip didn't offer much objective support specifically for rolfing. Massage therapy and physical therapy do what they are claimed to do in controlled clinical trials. Such is not the case with rolfing. If you look at the theory and practice of rolfing, you see words like "optimize", "balance", and "bringing peace from the ground up" - nonsensical weasel words. And if a rolfer is doing a more "evolved" gentle version, then they are simply doing massage and should call it massage.

Dr. Schleip was also not willing to drop support for acupuncture, even though controlled double blind studies with opaque sheathed needles have demonstrated it's no better than placebo. 1000 poor studies do not offset one good study. You will find many poor studies seeming to support acupuncture, but the good ones find it's nonsense - as would be expected because meridians don't exist.

The connective tissue research is great, but rolfing is not. Those who benefit from such treatment are getting better due to placebo response (people benefit just from being touched by another person), massage, and stretching. Claims that it straightens the spine are analogous to the some bogus claims made by chiropractic. One can get better posture by muscle strengthening exercises and conventional stretching. If the person taking the before and after photo tells you to stand up straight, and doesn't take the photo until you look good, naturally your posture will be better in the "after" photo.
