Books and Ideas #18: Interview with Tabitha Grace Smith from Buffy Between the Lines
Episode 18 of Books and Ideas is finally out. It is an interview with Tabitha Grace Smith the creator of Buffy Between the Lines, the podcast audio drama that just won the Podcast Peer Award for Best Audio Drama.

In the interview Tabitha and I talk about writing and why we love Joss Whedon's work. I asked her why some fans love Buffy or Firefly, but not both. She has an interesting answer.

We also talked a little about the challenges of podcasting. Tabitha is involved in 8 different podcasts, which makes me feel like a slacker!

The podcast includes the Valentine's episode of Buffy Between the Lines, which means you have another chance to catch my "voice-acting debut."

First off, the introduction to the episode helped a lot. When I first heard the episode, I had no idea what was going on. Thanks!

A really nice interview, I thought, though I must admit that – even without letting out my inner Lee Goldberg – I have no connection to fan fiction. I'm just not interested in it.

Currently watching: S5 ep6.

By the way, what do you think of the recent plot development in S8 (the comic)?

I agree with you about fan fiction, but it seems to be amazingly popular.

We just watched S3 Ep1. About Season 8 (the comic for those of you who do not know!), the recent plot twist was quite a surprise, especially since I was never able to unravel the clues to who kissed Buffy (was that issue 3?). No spoilers from me, but if you liked Buffy be sure to check out the Season 8 comic. It takes the story past the end of the series and Joss is in charge.

By the way, be sure to check out the latest episode of The Philosopher's Zone. It turns out host Alan Saunders is also a Buffy fan. He interviews the author of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy.

Thanks for the link. Interesting interview, though I always thought of Mal's Speech as supremely humanistic and not Christian. Perhaps my own baggage weighing in.

I agree with your take on Mal's speech, but I guess one of the great things about fiction is that people always interpret it from their own world view.

Good fiction, at least

Yeah, if it was spelled out
(MAL: I'm going to get religious now. Listen to me.)
then it would be boring and ham-handed.

It's also why it can be very interesting to talk about why people like certain things.

A friend of mine borrowed me her Season 7 DVDs, and I jumped ahead from the middle of s5 to watch them, not without apprehension.

I must say it's not the best season of Buffy, but it's surely not the crap-fest I remembered from watching the German dubs. I guess the dubbing (not only was it bad, but I was used to English Buffy) really played a part.

Ginger, I'd never seen a Buffy episode previous to this show, but the interview was so interesting I've since borrowed "Season One" from the local library. My wife and I had a ball watching the episodes and we'll try to find more of them to enjoy.

Thanks!

Gene

Season 1 is fun, but the story really gets going in Season 2. My husband and I just finished rewatching Season 3, which is my favorite.

By the way, I will have a small part in Season 2 of Buffy Between the Lines (a podcast).

By the way, I also have a small part in Season 2 of Buffy Between the Lines. I am in Episode 8. I play Edna Mae Wilkens and I have my second death scene.
