Books and Ideas Episode 22: Dragon*Con 2008
Episode 22 of Books and Ideas is an unusually personal episode. In this episode I share the highlights from my recent trip to Dragon*Con 2008, which was held in Atlanta, Georgia over Labor Day Weekend. I have already posted the live Brain Science Podcast (Episode 46) that I recorded, but in this episode I tell you about all the other activities. You will want to go to the Show Notes to find links both to the audio from some of my other activities and to the other podcasters that I spent time with in Atlanta. (1) Of course we fictiony guys are interested in the science side of things! (Oh, you weren't talking about me?) (2) Is there such a thing as an apologetic Democrat? Well, maybe if you'd rather vote Nader but don't want to muck up the election three times in a row... (3) I must admit that as much fun as it sounds, I really don't get the appeal of either Buffy - Between the Lines or doing a singalong Horrible Blog. And people being able to quote the whole dialogue (as you described) sounds almost cult-like. And I *am* a big Whedon fan. (4) Sadly, I won't visit the US or Dragon*Con before the airport security measures have revolved into somewhat resembling rationality. Or I have been browbeaten into acceptance of them. Nice podcast otherwise. The strangest thing though was that for the longest time it sounded as if you had actually been on the official sing-along blog (and were only reprising you role). I couldn't wait to get home and watch it before I finally got it. Also, the podcasting community does sound a little incestuous, what with the roughly seven names there seem to be. _________________ Braaains! |

I can't argue against your observation that such activities have a "cult-like" quality. All I can tell you is that it was fun.
Our current polices are embarrassing, but I had to think that they are keeping you away.
I was surprised that you got the impression I was in the original Dr. Horrible, but perhaps my reference to The Rocky Horror Picture Show was lost in translation. For many years (in the US) people have gone to movie theatre showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and acted out the show as it played on the screen. The same thing has been done with the musical episode from Season 6 of Buffy ("Once More With Feeling").
I didn't mean to give that impression. While some of the people I mentioned could be regarded as pioneers of podcasting, there are certainly a lot of other leaders who weren't at Dragon*Con. In fact, it was unfortunate that the "professional" meeting, which is now called the New Media Expo, was held only 2 weeks earlier in Las Vegas. I didn't go this year because of the high airfares, and conversely there were fewer podcasters from the west coast than would normally come to Dragon*Con. It is estimated that there are now hundreds of thousands of podcasts so I don't think "incestuous" is an accurate description. _________________ Dr. Ginger Campbell (aka. docartemis) Forum Creator and Administrator Brain Science Podcast

I'm sure it was. I didn't want to sound like crapping on that. I just had read a post about critiquing Joss Whedon and so probably was a little sensitive to that

I'm not sure what you mean, but at the moment, financial considerations are keeping me away far more effectively.
Really, seeing the youtube of Dr Horrible was my first experience of such a pantomimed show. I just thought it was funny how I couldn't believe I hadn't recognized you, that you actually made it onto a Whedon show, etc.
Not your fault. It's just that these are the only pdcasting names I have heard from other podcasts. I know there are lots and lots of podcasts, and of course these are pioneers. But the only one of these I listen to is Scott Sigler, and I still know all their names. I like it when I hear new names – I started listening to the Psych Files after you mentioned it. _________________ Braaains! |
