I really enjoyed the interview with Jennifer Hecht.

The discussion of the absurdity of gyms reminded of a story I heard a little while ago (unfortunately I don't remember the source. It was probably from the radio or a podcast.) A man, living near a village where the locals spent their days out fishing in small row boats, received a mail order magazine. In it he found an advert for a rowing machine. Thinking the local men would find it amusing he showed the advert to them. They were perplexed by the complex machine and asked the man to explain it to them. "Well. It's designed so someone can row, like you row your fishing boats, but they can do it indoors." The men considered this for a while then one of them asked, "Why would you want to do that?"
"So they can get some exercise," the man explained.
"What's exercise?" they asked.

On happiness: My father worked for a time with the Samaritans in the UK and a lady there told him that the secret of happiness was acceptance. I think there is a lot of truth in that.

Higgledy's post puts me in mind of the round "Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream...." That song fits in well with some of the hampster-wheel actions we pursue.

I'm delighted that podcasts exist, and ones like Ginger's in particular. Both Ginger and Jennifer demonstrate the value of context in making sense of our lives and times. I'm also delighted that the word "context" derives from the Latin word "texere," which means "to weave," as in the words "textile" and "texture." This interview, as with Jennifer's stellar books, help me in stepping back from the rowing flow of my life, enabling me to better see the overall pattern of the tapestry.
